About IP Addresses

What is an IP Address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.

IPv4 Addresses

IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) addresses are 32-bit numerical addresses represented in dotted-decimal format.

  • Format: Four groups of numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1)
  • Each group can range from 0 to 255
  • Total possible addresses: Approximately 4.3 billion
  • Widely used but becoming scarce due to the increasing number of internet-connected devices

IPv6 Addresses

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) addresses are 128-bit addresses represented in hexadecimal format.

  • Format: Eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334)
  • Each group is 16 bits long
  • Total possible addresses: Approximately 340 undecillion (3.4 × 10^38)
  • Designed to replace IPv4 and solve the address exhaustion problem
  • Provides improved security and network routing efficiency

Public vs Private IP Addresses

Public IP addresses are unique and routable on the internet, while private IP addresses are used within local networks and are not directly accessible from the internet.

Why Your IP Address Matters

  • Identifies your device on the internet
  • Used for geolocation services
  • Important for network troubleshooting
  • Can affect access to region-restricted content
